Light in the Dark
Quantum Fluctuations

2011 – 2012
from the series “Freedom”

Phosphorescent Acrylic paintings in the light and in the dark.

The phosphorescent acrylic paint in these paintings absorbs light during the day and glows brightly for many hours during the night.

Marlis sees the abstract forms in her paintings arising spontaneously from a combination of technique and mindset. Reminiscent of the strokes found in Japanese or Chinese pictographic calligraphy, her hand movements effortlessly glide across the canvas with a fluid confidence. Unlike traditional calligraphy, Marlis purposely enters a meditative state before painting where most thinking has stopped and her forms arise as if from an empty space, perhaps in the same way that particles appear from the vast emptiness of the subatomic world. In quantum physics, Quantum Fluctuations are the “temporary appearance of energetic particles out of empty space.”
